12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup

After the APUSH exam we will be reading 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northrup and the viewing the recently released and critically film based on Northrup's experiences.

It will be nice to focus on an important subject matter with some real depth.  Please read Mr. Clark's comment below for further important information.

  1. My hope with this course of study is that we get to take a closer look at an important topic in our nation's history. By reading the book 12 Years a Slave and watching the corresponding movie I hope our APUSHers develop a liking and interest to Northrop's story. For the book APUSHers will be required to comment on a variety of prompts on this blog. Requirements, grading value and deadlines will be posted by Mr. Clark. These required posts will be MINOR grades.

After we read the book and view the movie, students will write a paper that focuses on comparing and contrasting the two. This assignment will be valued as a MAJOR grade.

The grades surrounding the book and movie will also be an opportunity for APUSHers to offset the grades earned during the preparation for the AP Exam.

    Your first assignment:
Comment on what you think about the assignment. This comment must be a minimum on 2 sentences. It is worth 10 points and must be completed by class on Monday, May 19th. Make sure you indicate your name on your comment.

    Enjoy,
    Mr. Clark

    1. I think the assignment is a reasonable and useful assignment. By posting comments we'll be able to see each persons interpretation of the reading from that night and therefore keep an open mind. The essay I believe will be fun and challenging similar to a "Spot the Difference" game.

  4. I think this assignment is a great way to gain a better, more effective perspective on slavery and the slave trade. I look forward to reading the novel and establishing a better understanding of the time period that shaped American history as we know it today. Its effects can still be felt and our nation as a whole is continuing to deal with the the aftermath of slavery. This assignment will be am influential tool in giving us the information we need to better face the issues at haND that we will most likely continue to face for a time to come.

  5. I think that the assignment is a great way to slow down the course from the rigorous and fast paced curriculum. It will be a refreshing way to look at a topic in more depth and will allow for increased interaction between students about the book. The movie will provide different and more in depth visual representation than that of the reader and it will be interesting to view the changes the movie producers made to the story.

  6. I am looking forward to reading the book as I have heard such great reviews on it. I think that this assignment will be a nice change from the set Apush curriculum. I think that this novel will provide us with a deeper understanding and a firsthand look into slavery. I think the assignment will be challenging, and it will open us up to new ways of making connections and broaden our creative thinking skills.

  7. I'm looking forward to a change up in APUSH in the coming weeks now that our AP exam has passed. It was a bit overwhelming preparing for the exam in these passed few weeks, and I have found myself studying merely to learn facts about history rather than thinking, investigating and becoming more emotionally involved in the APUSH curriculum. I'm excited for "12 Years a Slave" as I am looking forward to focusing less on the test and more on the details that are hidden within our countries history; especially surrounding the topic of slavery- one that I am very passionate about.

  8. I'm looking forward to reading this book and watching the movie, as I've heard great things about both. It's a movie that I wanted to watch, but for whatever reason never did, so I'm glad I'll have this opportunity to read through 12 Years a Slave and take away much more than I would if I had only watched the movie. It should be a nice change up for APUSH.

  9. I am personally looking forward to this assignment. I believe it will allow us to learn about a key event in history in much more depth than a regular apush class would allow. I also think the comparison of the book and the movie is an interesting way to keep our attention.

  10. In all honesty I was looking forward to prepping for the regents rather than reading a book, however I have read a few pages and it sounds pretty good. Plus thinking logically how much preparation do we really need?
